The Tree of Life is a symbol that is popular in many cultures and/or spiritual beliefs.
From Wikipedia:
The Tree of Life in the Book of Genesis is a tree planted by God in midst of the Garden of Eden (Paradise), whose fruit gives everlasting life, i.e. immortality. (Judeo-Christian)
For Madonnna, and others who follow the mystical Kabbalah, The Tree of Life, is used to understand the nature of God and the manner in which He created the world out of nothing.
For mystical traditions, the Tree of Life represents the coveted state of eternal aliveness or fulfillment, not immortality of the body or soul.
Take your pick. Tree tattoos are wonderfully symbolic.
